Gemma Yin Taylor

Gemma Yin Taylor is a London based film-maker and animator based in London. Her illustrative approach to film gives her work a vibrant moving collage look as she splices together traditional and handmade elements with cutting edge digital methods. Her strong drawing and painting skills are a key factor in the creative process, as she hones ideas in sketchbooks and digital mood boards, constantly experimenting with a wide range of mixed-media that incorporate expressive mark-making and lively handling of colour - to conjure up a very handcrafted pop aesthetic.

After studying Illustration & Animation at Kingston University Gemma shaped TANK magazine’s video output for four years, before branching out as a freelancer in 2014. Since then with her skilled navigation of digital and 2D stop-motion techniques Gemma has expertly carved a distinct style that melds bright graphics and moving collage components to create dynamic attention grabbing shorts that bring to life content across all commercial genres. This has seen her become in-demand to produce original work for major record and fashion labels, shooting vivacious music videos and memorable ads that convey instant messages. Gemma is well practiced at running quickly with a brief, sparking up ideas, piecing together visual research and creating it from scratch - often shooting products and handmade elements under a rostrum camera and generating graphic assets to add the mix. For live background footage she enjoys collaborating closely with producers and will direct the crew and talent to get what she needs. Once the various assets are captured she will usually work independently to edit and animate the results in post-production. Despite her multi-layered approach to production Gemma is a firm believer that it always shows in the final film if you have had fun working on a project, and you only have to look at her playful montages to see the delight she takes in communicating ideas quickly, loudly and with flair.
