Preview of a project that captures Southend-on-Sea, and a selection of places in its surrounding area. It is a collaboration between photographer Holly Falconer and artist Kerry Hughes. The series began as an offshoot of Holly’s project ‘West Country Born’, a selection of photographs of the area she grew up in. In it they documented places as they are now, but with the knowledge that childhood nostalgia was shaping what was captured. Once you have moved away from somewhere, the idealisation and burden of the past shifts perception of a place. Kerry and Holly took a similar approach to Southend-on-Sea and its nearby towns, where Kerry grew up. Kerry chose a variety of places around the area to cover: Rayleigh, Canvey island, Battlesbridge, Basildon and Leigh-On-Sea. Shooting over one summer and capturing people they struck up conversation with along the way – the project is a visual diary of revisited memories.
